Weddings at castles in the Czech Republic, an overview of castle wedding types
What a castle wedding entails, the types of castles available and what to watch out for. Indicative prices, availability and tips.
Not all castles are the same
You can find over 2,000 castles in the Czech Republic, but only a fraction of them are available for wedding hire. From a wedding perspective, we distinguish three types:
1. State-run castles (NPÚ)
The National Heritage Institute manages some of the most famous Czech castles - Hluboká, Konopiště, Český Krumlov. You can hold your wedding there, but with limitations: the ceremony is typically in historic halls, while the reception takes place elsewhere (often in the gardens or an adjacent hotel). Prices are fair (5,000-20,000 Kč for the ceremony), but logistics are more demanding.
2. Private castles with commercial operations
This is the most common option for weddings. The castle has its own manager, private banquet halls and often rooms too. The rental price ranges from 50,000 to 200,000 Kč, usually including the ceremony, a hall for the reception and several rooms for the newlyweds and their closest family.
3. Castle hotels
The castle operates as a hotel year-round, with weddings being one of its services. The advantage: everything under one roof, including accommodation for all guests. Examples include Chateau Mcely, Château Liblice and Zbiroh Castle. The price for a wedding ranges from 150,000 to 500,000 Kč.
What to really expect at a castle
A castle wedding has its own magic, but also specific features:
- Ceremony - ideally in the castle chapel, garden or a representative hall. Capacity for 20-80 guests.
- Feast - in the dining room or banquet hall. Usually a served menu, with buffet style only available at some castles.
- Entertainment - live music is very much in place at a castle, while a disco is more of an exception. Many castles have noise limits.
- Photos - photographers will love the castle. Staircases, halls, gardens and mirrors provide the perfect backdrop.
Regional differences
A castle wedding is not the same across the country:
- South Bohemia - Hluboká, Český Krumlov, Třeboň. The most photogenic, but also the most expensive and in highest demand.
- Central Bohemia - accessible from Prague, a wide selection at reasonable prices.
- Jižní Morava - Valtice, Lednice, Mikulov. A combination of castle and wine region.
- Vysočina - Telč, Žďár nad Sázavou. Smaller venues with an authentic atmosphere.
When to book
Popular castles are booked 18 months in advance for summer Saturdays. If you are flexible with the date:
- Friday wedding - often 20-30% cheaper and with more availability.
- Off-season (March, October, November) - less competition, ideal for castles hosting indoor banquets.
- Outdoor wedding in the castle garden - May to September, ensure you have a Plan B for rain.
What you won't see in the photos
Castle photographs look wonderful on websites, but reality has a few things that are often overlooked:
- Kitchen - some castles do not have their own kitchen, so catering is brought in.
- Parking - at listed monuments this is often limited, with guests parking in the village.
- Guest accommodation - the castle has 4-8 rooms. You will need to house the rest of your guests in surrounding hotels.
- Air conditioning - this is rather exceptional in historic buildings. In summer, it can be borderline.
Summary
A castle wedding is a classic choice that feels truly ceremonial, and your photos will still look wonderful in 20 years. The cost is similar to other venue types when you consider the complete budget: a castle instead of a barn, but lower decoration expenses as the history speaks for itself.
