Why South Moravia
South Moravia ranks first in the number of weddings in Czechia, and there are several reasons for this. A combination of wine cellars, the castles of the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, Moravian cuisine, and generally warmer weather makes the region a destination considered even by couples from Prague and other parts of the country.

Types of wedding venues in the region
Castles - Lednice, Valtice, Mikulov
The Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape (UNESCO) is the most popular wedding location in the Czech Republic. Lednice Castle offers ceremonies in the gardens, while Valtice Castle has its own banquet halls. Rental prices range from 80 000 to 200 000 Kč (about €8,000). Book at least 18 months in advance.
Mikulov Castle stands on a cliff overlooking the town and the wine-growing landscape. It has a smaller capacity but offers a unique photo backdrop.
Wine cellars
A unique choice for South Moravia. A wedding in a wine cellar has a specific atmosphere - vaulted ceilings, candles, and tastings of local wines. Ideal for smaller weddings with up to 60 guests. Prices range from 20 000 to 70 000 Kč (about €2,800), often including catering.
Well-known locations: Pavlov, Velké Pavlovice, Mikulov, Znojmo. Each municipality has several family-run wineries that regularly host weddings.
Barns and farmsteads
A Moravian barn has a different character than one in Bohemia - lower buildings, ornamental gables, often combined with vineyards. Barns in South Moravia can be found from the Znojmo area to Slovácko.
Hotels and guesthouses
For couples travelling from further afield, it is practical to choose a hotel with its own wedding package. The region features both small family-run guesthouses (15-30 people) and hotels such as Galant Mikulov or Galant Břeclav.
Specifics of a Moravian wedding
A wedding in South Moravia has a few features that work differently than elsewhere in the Czech Republic:
- Wine instead of beer - yes, beer will naturally be served, but wine is the hallmark of a Moravian wedding. Ordering directly from the winemaker is common and cost-effective.
- Cymbalom / folk band - adding 20-30 minutes of live folk music or cymbalom to the programme gives the wedding a local character. The bands in the region are very good.
- Traditional costumes - in wine-growing villages, couples sometimes wear traditional costumes, either for the ceremony or for the procession.
- Food - Moravian cuisine (pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, head cheese, sweet pastries) is part of the cultural experience at a wedding. Do not expect Italian tapas from a Moravian caterer.
Seasons
South Moravia is hot and dry in summer. Most popular dates:
- May to June - blooming vineyards, mild temperatures.
- September - grape harvest, romantic atmosphere, but venues are fully booked.
- August - very hot; cellars are pleasant, outside possibly over 30 °C.
Accessibility from Prague
From Prague, Lednice is 270 km away (3 hours by car), and Mikulov is 280 km. For guests travelling from afar, plan for an overnight stay - there is a wide selection of guesthouses in the region, but during the main season (May-September) book at least 6+ months in advance.
